Q: The caulk at the joint of our bathtub and the wall appears to be very moldy. I tried bleach and Tilex but they didn't remove the stains. I don't think I can remove the old caulk. What do you suggest? - B. Huk

A: Here is a treatment that works well for me on moldy or mildewed caulk: Fold toilet paper or white paper towels into thick, narrow pads. Dip the pads into full-strength chlorine bleach and place them on the caulk, poultice fashion. Leave the pads in place overnight or at least for several hours, then remove the pads and rinse the caulk with a wet rag or sponge and clean water. If this does not remove some or all of the stains, then I do not think they are mold or mildew, but ground-in dirt.
