Summary


After receiving my degree in education and my teaching certificate, I came home from college, eager to start work. I went to the McDowell County schools superintendent to apply for a position, asking for a school that really needed a teacher. I was hired right away to teach in a one-room school for a lumber camp on the Virginia border, 3 miles from the hard-surfaced road.

When I arrived at the school, I was instructed to go 1 mile farther up the hollow to the home of a family who promised room and board for the teacher.
