As a child during the Great Depression, we understood that times were lean. My two brothers and I never went hungry, but our clothing was, by necessity, hand-me-downs, and there were times when a stout piece of cardboard had to be used to cover holes in the soles of our shoes.
There were no big-box shopping centers, large department stores or strip malls back then. A block or two away from home was a drugstore, greengrocer and stationery store.
