Summary


A few years ago, I was enjoying a beautiful March day scouting for deer. I had my lightweight tree stand on my back, a pack of tree steps and a pruning saw.

As I was hiking along a ridge top, I heard a group of gobblers cutting loose, preparing for their spring mating ritual. I ran into a gentlemen covered in camouflage, who was obviously scouting for the upcoming turkey season. He looked at me as if I was crazy, considering I was carrying a tree stand. I didn't want this hunter to know I was planning to hunt a huge deer in the area in eight months, so I simply let him believe I was planning to hunt turkeys from a tree stand.

We parted ways, and I could hear him laughing as he walked away. I later became aware of the fact that he joked with some of his buddies about my crazy turkey-hunting tactics. It never crossed that hunter's mind that I was actually scouting for deer in March. After a successful fall season, I had the last laugh.
