Summary
CHARLESTON has two sectors where crime, blight, drug dealing and violence are notoriously severe. One is the East End, where police enforce a "zero tolerance" policy with increased patrols. The other is the West Side, where four shootings have occurred in the past two weeks and a presumed murder victim was found in a burned house.
The West Side story grabbed the spotlight last week when a 16- year-old allegedly pulled a small pistol and shot another youth in the abdomen on the steps of Emmanuel Baptist Church as the two waited for the Capital High School bus.
