Summary


Of all the historic buildings of ragtime Charleston, the Burlew Opera House is perhaps the most often mentioned, possibly because it was the center of Charleston's entertainment life or because it was such a grand building. Built in 1892, it was torn down in 1920.

Photos of the Burlew are, oddly enough, very rare primarily because Capitol Street is so narrow that photographers just could not find a camera angle to show the whole building. It is with great pleasure that I present to you this astoundingly clear photo of a U.S. Army band in front of the Burlew celebrating the U.S. entry into World War I on April 6, 1917.
