Summary


If we could have asked the men sitting on the federal building steps what they thought of Adolf Hitler, they probably would have looked puzzled and say they never heard of him! This photo was taken in 1938, and even though World War II was on the horizon, many Americans were more worried about having a job and making ends meet. The Great Depression was still going strong even though Franklin D. Roosevelt had tried nearly every medicine he could think of to bring the nation out of the doldrums.

The federal building - a Charleston landmark - was built in 1911 as a combination courthouse and post office. In the lower right of the picture, we can clearly see the cars that were parked diagonally alongside the building. Quarrier Street was not extended to Summers Street until the mid-1950s.
