Football isnt nearly as complicated as the guy with the headset enthuses. It merely calls for foot and ball, field and goal, cold and beer. Simple, really. Any finer points have been explained to you, patiently, every high-school Friday, every collegiate Saturday and every postgraduate Sunday. Yet remain hazy. Youre still unclear why they cant keep the traffic moving. Seems to stop every few seconds for another pileup. A question best not posed to the outside linebacker brother. Presumably hes busy outside, backing lines. Just as he must assume you are busy, arranging food in columns. Not comprehending the sport has not stopped you from attending several thousand games. You enjoy kabuki and opera and other spectacles whose central plot remains obscure. Its all about the pageantry. The very best football, you know, is played in a bowl. A bowl flavored orange or gator or rose or super. A bowl you understand. Its all round and roomy and pull-up-a-spoon convivial. And these days, the bowl-like football is big. The bowl has served reliably ever since cavegirl got a cramp in her cupped palm. Now, emulating the success of the wrap and the skewer, the bowl is going glam. No longer just a serving dish, the bowl has been upgraded to a dish. In the din of the teahouse, the hungry debate noodle bowl or rice bowl. The frozen foods aisle glistens with Hawaiian bowl, teriyaki bowl, steak bowl and organic baked ziti bowl. Bowl food isnt merely food in bowl. Its a specific sort of food in bowl. Food thats hot and comforting and thick. Not so lax as to actually need a bowl, like soup, but not so independent as to find the bowl confining, like steak. The bowl comes padded end zone to end zone with polenta or rice or noodle. The brawny sort able to absorb the full weight of the ratatouille, pulled pork or short rib pileup. Its a winning combination. One the football professional stationed on field or in armchair might term super.
