Like legendary football stars whose jersey numbers are retired to honor their ability to kick tail and persevere, the names of storms are retired if they cause damage of a magnitude far beyond that brought on by their colleagues.
Last week, the World Meteorological Organization dropped three storm names - Gustav, Ike and Paloma - from its official list of Atlantic-spawned storms, based on the amount of destruction they caused during the 2008 season.
