Pity the poor writer of a best-selling murder series. Say, Sue Grafton. She's the one with the alphabet series, now up to "S is for Silence." I'll spare you the need to sing the alphabet song on your fingers: That's book No. 19, all with the irascible 30-something Southern California detective Kinsey Millhone as the star.

I know readers who bought "A is for Alibi" back in 1983 partly because they thought any writer who alphabetized her books had admirable nerve, thinking she had the material for 26 books. And, they bought the book partly because they were looking forward to having 25 more mysteries to read.
