Showcasing the State, Products Made by West Virginians Sell Well in City Mall

When Showcase West Virginia opened at the Charleston Town Center in October 2000, the store was intended to remain open only for three months. After three years and four locations, sales are strong at the store that sells wares from 230 small-scale manufacturers and artisans statewide.

Sales increased by 11 percent from 2002 to 2003, said Pam Curry, executive director of the non-profit Center for Economic Options, which runs Showcase West Virginia. While the National Retail Federation predicted a 5.7 percent nationwide increase in sales from the 2002 to 2003 holiday season, Showcase West Virginia enjoyed a 17 percent increase in sales this December compared with last.
