HUNTINGTON - Sometimes, you really do play like you practice. The latest exhibit is Marshall's defensive performance in its 31-28 victory over Southern Illinois.

Albert McClellan, the most recognizable leader of that unit, admitted that practice was not as crisp as he would like in the days before the season opener. The close game - and the long, quick touchdown SIU drives at the end of each half - should send a message of urgency to the defense. So will the Virginia Tech film, no doubt.

"We practiced, sometimes we went through the motions," McClellan said. "Coach [Rick] Minter [defensive coordinator] has been telling us all week that we've been practicing a little sluggish, a little laid-back. It's going to show on film, and it did today. It's going to show when we watch film on Monday."
