HACKENSACK, N.J. - Officials overseeing construction at the World Trade Center site say they are confident they will achieve their most critical resolution for 2011 - completing a memorial to the nearly 3,000 people killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Over the next nine months, Port Authority officials say, nearly 8 acres of the now-buzzing construction site will be transformed into a space for solemn reflection: a tree-studded plaza with two cascading pools shaped in the footprints of the toppled Twin Towers.

Port Authority Plans to Keep Firm Deadline On 9/11 Memorial

The memorial's Sept. 12 opening will mark the first time the public is allowed on the site since the deadliest terrorist attack on U.S. soil.

"We understand that on Sept. 11, 2011, the world will be watching the result of the work we're doing right now," the Port Authority's Deputy Executive Director Bill Baroni said on a recent tour of the site. "Not having the memorial completed is not an option."
