PARIS - Both the Bush administration and John Kerry, George W. Bush's Democratic challenger, are committed to continuing a course in Iraq that few in the American policy community seem to grasp is self-destructive.

Both say they won't "cut and run." They may find that the practical choice is between cutting and running creatively or doing so destructively by prolonging the agony. U.S. forces are in a tactical condition of near futility, a kind of military squirrel cage.
