HERE'S trivia you've probably never thought about: Lettuce is one of the few vegetables you can't preserve. You can't get lettuce in a can, or frozen lettuce, or dried lettuce. You have to eat it fresh.

I (Tara) never gave it much thought, either, until I force-fed my family dozens of pounds of lettuce and then found out it can - allegedly - get you high. (If you read our columns on poppy seeds or nutmeg, you know where this is going. Incidentally, if there's a food without a hallucinogenic or aphrodisiacal claim, we haven't found it.)
