One of the justifications for spending $3.6 million to renovate the Governor's Mansion was that the state of disrepair of the old mansion made it unsuitable for accommodating visiting dignitaries and business prospects.

In fact, during the lengthy renovation, first lady Gayle Manchin expressed dismay at not being able to host dignitaries at the mansion.
