Dr. Alton C. Byers of Elkins, director of research and education for The Mountain Institute, has received the Sir Edmund Hillary Mountain Legacy Medal for "remarkable service in conservation of culture and nature in remote mountainous regions."
The award is named for the New Zealander who, with Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, was the first person to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Hillary later established foundations that built schools, clinics, hospitals and airstrips in the Mount Everest region of Nepal.See the full content of this document
