Q. What is the best way to seal knots in wood so they don't show through paint? I am building an outdoor project with knotty wood. - R. Bedard

A. Shellac is the traditional sealer for knots. It helps keep sap from bleeding through painted topcoats. Small cans of de-waxed shellac can be bought at some paint stores and home centers. Shellac is basically an interior finish, however, and if used as a sealer outdoors it should be top-coated soon after drying. Fortunately, shellac dries quickly so there should be little delay.
