A. Shellac is the traditional sealer for knots. It helps keep sap from bleeding through painted topcoats. Small cans of de-waxed shellac can be bought at some paint stores and home centers. Shellac is basically an interior finish, however, and if used as a sealer outdoors it should be top-coated soon after drying.
