PARIS - The spectacle, or perhaps one should say the gladiatorial contest, of the American presidential debates finished on Wednesday, the imperium of the electorate yet to decree who is the victor and who perishes. That comes in less than three weeks.
One calls it a spectacle because of the peculiar character these public ordeals have acquired. They have never been true debates on the serious issues of national life. The issues are contested, but in contorted, symbolic and demogogic terms.
