LUOYANG CITY, China - The bubble machine was going full blast as Daoqun and I, along with the other secondary guests, looked down at the soon-to-be-newlyweds standing under the canopy at the front of the huge ballroom far below. The pair was being inundated by pearlescent bubbles, falling from above and bursting upon them as they landed. They wore self-conscious, immobile smiles that seemed a mixture of embarrassment and real joy. It was my first time at an upscale Chinese wedding.
