Summary


David McCullough never disappoints the reader. In his book "The Great Bridge," I felt I was with the workers in the fetid and dangerous confines of underwater caissons. As he wrought his masterpiece on Harry S. Truman, there was sorrow in my heart as the book ended. The biography of John Adams allowed a figure who lived so long ago to become a contemporary.

This new book, "The Greater Journey," is centered in Paris of the 19th century, features not one, but many people who came to the "city of light" from the early part of the century until near the end. They were extraordinary people. John Singer Sargent and Mary Cassatt polished their painting skills in Paris studios and in the Louvre.
