Summary


Recently I read this headline: "Math rules cause worry at schools." It caught my attention because math has been a worrisome subject much of my life.

Further, I learned that "starting next fall, all ninth-graders must be enrolled in algebra or a more advanced class, like geometry." I recalled at that moment having taken algebra in the ninth grade at Roosevelt Junior High School in 1936 and failing it. And I remembered how math had been a mystery to me in every course I had to take or took voluntarily. No subject or thing or event has contributed more to my lack of self-respect and confidence than has the mystery of math.

Even Spanish was a mystery in junior high school. I failed it also. My parents had split, Depression had come and I was so distracted by inner conflicts I couldn't focus for long on anything.
